    Americans need – and are asking for – more healthy-eating options.

    According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Americans eat less than the recommended amount of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, dairy products and oils. Not only that, but reducing sodium intake by 1,200 milligrams per day could possibly save as much as $20 billion a year in medical costs.

    Fortunately, these franchises offer healthy eating options and are looking to expand – and we’re not talking about waistlines here.

    Here are 10 emerging healthy eating franchises that currently have less than 50 units.

    PROTEINHOUSE was started in 2012 and aims to give consumers with busy schedules an opportunity to eat healthily. The menu at this health-focused chain includes wellness shots, high-protein burgers, acai bowls and protein pancakes. Busy customers can opt for the Meal Prep option, which allows them to order several meals and pick them up. The brand touts its website as being high-traffic, and all franchise locations are featured on it. Other benefits for franchisees include an expert support hotline, ongoing vendor support and marketing assistance. The company does fundraising for Feeding America through its Push Ups with Purpose campaign.

    In the not too distant past heart disease and different ailments that weren’t too common started springing up everywhere.

    So, they turned to 829 teenagers participating in Project Viva, long-term research that recruited pregnant mothers and has tracked them and their kids for nearly 14 years. Heart disease remains a major killer, said lead researcher Elizabeth Cespedes Feliciano.

    She’s a staff scientist with the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research in Oakland, Calif. Typical sleep duration for children in the study was only a little over seven hours daily, researchers found. “I was really struck by how little these teens are sleeping,”

     

    said Dr. Andrew Varga, a sleep medicine specialist with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.

    “It isn’t totally surprising, given what I know about kids and their habits, but you’d think there could be some drive for these kids to sleep more because they

    have a higher sleep need.” MONDAY, June 18, 2018 (HealthDay News) — Many kids don’t get enough sleep, which may put them on a path to future heart trouble, a new study finds. Further, almost a third of children slept less than seven hours. Coffee is said to be one of the reasons kids aren’t getting much sleep.

    That’s because so many young ones are increasingly drinking coffee. But research has shown that coffee has more benefits than concerns.

    But it appears that hardly any kids are getting the type of nightly slumber that would protect their upcoming heart health. In fact, only 2.2 percent of the children met or exceeded the typical recommended sleep length for their age group — nine hours per day for children 11 to 13 and eight hours

    per day for teens 14 to 17. Prior studies have demonstrated that insufficient sleep boosts the odds for obesity. But Feliciano’s group wanted to check whether a lack of sleep also affects other heart disease variables for children.     A tight housing market continues to push prices, downtown visions will be realized

    Construction crews have been working for more than a year on a mixed use development on Front Street.

    The trends are going in the right direction for homeowners: an increase in prices and a sharp drop this year in foreclosures, both in Central Massachusetts and across the state. A tight supply market means finding a home is more difficult.

    Without a major change on the horizon to affect prices – such as a significant economic downturn or an unprecedented building boom – 2018 appears likely to see the same storylines as 2017.

    Higher and higher prices

    Single-family homes Worcester County were selling at an average of $259,000 through the first 10 months of the year, a jump of 5.7 percent over the same period in 2016.

    The market remains tight, though. The number of sales for the year increased only by 1.5 percent.

    There may be a reprieve on the horizon, if it comes soon enough. Gov. Charlie Baker announced in December his Housing Choice Initiative, calling for 135,000 new housing units by 2025.

    Major foreclosure decrease

    Through October, foreclosure petitions – the first step in the foreclosure process – were down in Worcester County by 22 percent.

    Foreclosure auctions and deeds are also down for the year.

    Petitions for foreclosures fell in nine of the first 10 months of the year, with October having the largest year-over-year decline, according to Boston real estate informatoin firm The Warren Group. October brought foreclosure petitions down to the lowest level since February 2014.

    Much of the development envisioned to take the footprint of the former Worcester Galleria mall has come to fruition, including a reborn Mercantile Center office tower and Saint Vincent Cancer & Wellness Center.

    But the type of development getting people the most excited, such as new neighborhood residents and restaurants, will finally become reality in 2018.

    A 170-room AC Hotel is slated to open in March, around the same time that the first of 365 residential units open at the adjacent 145 Front at City Square development.

    The hotel will feature a 110 Grill and the apartment building a location by the healthy-eating restaurant chain PROTEINHOUSE.

    Restaurant space is also available at Mercantile Center, and just on the other side of the Worcester Common at the Grid District, a beer garden could open by March, and Stix, an Asian noodle restaurant next door by October.

    A common misconception when it comes to nutrition and fitness is that food is your enemy and muscle growth only occurs if you dedicate 110% of your time to working out.

    This is completely incorrect and an unhealthy way to think. The truth is that your body needs the proper nourishment to accommodate the changes you are making to your exercise routine.
    That’s why the motto of ProteinHouse is “Abs are made in the kitchen, not in the gym!” If you want to get lean, you better eat clean. Here are some foolproof tips for you to follow to make sure that you’re giving your body the nutrients it needs.

    1 – You Have to Eat

    Avoiding food is not only terrible for your mental health but your physical health as well. Your metabolism will suffer and your body will resort to using up the nutrients stored in your muscles to feed itself, resulting in a loss of muscle in addition to fat.
    Eating will provide your body with everything that it needs to burn fat, keep your metabolism stable, and feed your muscles, which are the very things they need to bulk up and get lean. You can’t avoid eating, but you can make sure that you eat right.

     

    2 – Eat the Right Foods

    Unless you’re using steroids or have somehow won the genetic lottery, you’re not going to see those washboard abs by eating anything you want. Be sure to avoid processed foods, eat plenty of whole foods, and stay as natural as possible. Coffee is the best thermogenic on the planet I think. Its natural and healthy and promotes weight loss. The Coffeeblog has a great article on this.It’s not essential to go 100% natural, but you need to make sure you’re taking in a diet that is 75-80% whole foods. The transition from fast food to whole foods can be difficult, but this is a lifestyle change and a journey that you’re embarking on because you love your body and want to take care of it. It will be worth it in the end.

    3 – Every Meal Must Have a Protein Source

    Getting ripped is not just about shedding fat! You’ll need a substantial amount of muscle to get the results you want. Lean muscle burns fat, and building up your muscles requires a steady intake of protein.

    During your mission to reveal those abs, you’ll need to carefully balance your calorie intake through protein. You’ll feel fuller for a longer time, since protein keeps you satiated, and you’ll be preventing the muscle breakdown that occurs after calorie reduction. Making sure you eat protein with every meal, combined with a good weight-lifting and core/cardio routine, will help your six-pack take shape more quickly.

    4 – Eat Greens & Keep Fiber High

    Green vegetables such as legumes are a great source of vegetables and carbs, which are essential for building muscle. Eating high-fiber food helps you lose weight quicker, prevent fluctuations in your weight, support your heart health, and increase feelings of fullness after a meal. Make it a point to eat a high-fiber green vegetable with every meal.

    5 – Don’t Be Afraid of Fat

    It might seem counterintuitive, but believe it or not, eating fat helps you lose fat. Your body requires natural fats to function. Ensuring that you get a balanced intake of fats will help you reach your goals faster. Some high-fat foods include extra-virgin olive oil, steak, beef, chicken, even avocado. Remember, limiting your food intake – especially your fat intake – will cause your body to go into “survival mode,” holding on to its fat reserves for as long as possible. Its an inherent instinct that kicks in when your brain is stressed from lack of nutrients. You can avoid this by taking in a healthy amount of dietary fats as an essential part of your diet.

    6 – Lift Weights

    If your priority is establishing a firm six-pack, you might not think you need to focus on building your biceps. Not only does muscle building burn your fat at higher rates, but it also increases testosterone levels and increases your general physical weight, including the muscles in your core.

    7 – Do Strategic High Intensity Cardio 1-2 x Per Week

    Say your goal is to get below a total of 10% body fat. You’ll need to do plenty of cardiovascular stimulation in addition weight lifting. The most effective type of cardio you can do is called High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). This refers to very intense bursts of exercise for short amounts of time followed by a brief resting period. A common HIIT technique is to sprint close to your max speed for 30 seconds, followed by 30 seconds of rest, repeated 6-8 times, as opposed to the more common technique called “steady-state cardio.”
    HIIT is believed to burn more fat and stimulate your metabolism such that fat is burned for up to 24 hours after the routine; as well as having the benefit of burning up fat, not muscle. HIIT greatly stimulates production of testosterone and human growth hormone (HGH), as well as increasing your lung capacity and strength. Perhaps best of all, the training periods only last 10 minutes or so!
    By definition, HIIT is an extremely difficult routine to get into, but the rewards are well worth it. You can use the Internet to find reliable routines for you to follow on almost any cardio machine. If you stick to a routine, you’ll see the results you want in no time.

    8 – Train after Fasting, if Possible

    If your schedule allows for it, it’s best to train in the morning before your first meal. “Fasted-state” training allows you to carve out your abs at a more accelerated pace. Your testosterone levels are at their highest in the morning, you’ll prime your body to burn fat for the rest of the day, and food you eat after working out will go straight to your muscles rather than being stored as fat, because your body needs those nutrients now as opposed to later. The benefits of fasted training also include increased HGH production, the targeting of fat cells for energy as no food in your system is available for food, and don’t worry – the myth that you’ll have an insulin spike is nothing more than just that: a myth.
    The first few times you train fasted might feel unusual, but that’s where the importance of perseverance comes in. Around the third or fourth session, you’ll notice an increase in energy and overall improved performance in the gym.     9 – Refuel Every 7-10 Days

    Stripping away your body fat requires you to remain in a caloric deficit for the majority of the time. However, it is also crucial that you refuel every so often. This refers to a notable spike in your caloric intake in order to reset your leptin levels, boost your metabolism, replenish your glycogen stores, and keep you feeling mentally refreshed. Don’t confuse a refuel day with a cheat day! You’re still eating those same healthy foods, just in greater amounts with each meal. If you’re really missing sweets, just be responsible with your portion control. It’s best to plan your refuel day ahead of time, deciding what to eat so that you can best enjoy the feeling of those increased proteins, carbs, and fats.

    Larissa Reis never minded the grueling two-a-day workouts.

    It was the eating that she found most difficult about her 10-year career as a world-champion bodybuilder. The 37-year-old Las Vegan, originally from Brasilia, Brazil, could only trust meals she prepared herself, which was far from ideal.

    “I’m a terrible cook,” Reis said. “Since I started competing, all my meals were very boring because I didn’t know how to cook. I always said, ‘If only I had cooks to do what I want and put in a little more taste.’ ”

    Now she’s got a team of cooks, and not only for her own benefit. Reis and then-boyfriend/fellow bodybuilder Andrew Bick opened ProteinHouse restaurant three years ago near Eastern Avenue and Silverado Ranch Boulevard, and have operated it ever since. It’s one of the most successful local examples of the booming healthy-restaurant industry. Research from the National Restaurant Association indicates 7 out of 10 adults have started to eat at healthier restaurants in the past two years. And Forbes reports that projections indicate global sales of healthy food products will eclipse $1 trillion in 2017.Healthy foods restaurant and Protein Shakes

    “I’m happy to be a part of health-food restaurants all across America,” Reis said. “I don’t see it as competitive, to be honest. I get really happy when I see other health-food openings because I think that’s what people need.”

    Reis hopes ProteinHouse separates from the pack by being more inclusive. The restaurant caters to everyone from the mostly carnivorous (the muscle-builder burger has two bison patties topped with Canadian bacon) to vegans (the vegan bowl has 13 vegetables).

    It also makes the common health-food promises of never freezing any meat and only using high-quality ingredients.

    “I’ve seen people say they don’t want to come here because they don’t feel like they’re in shape,” Reis said. “I say, this is where people get motivated. We don’t care what you look like.”

    Reis took up bodybuilding to go with a modeling career, and moved to Miami to realize her dream of becoming the first Brazilian to win an International Federation of BodyBuilders championship. She lived in South Florida for a few years before moving to Las Vegas six years ago to be with Bick.

    The two decided to open the restaurant as a precursor to whittling down their travel schedule for competitions and starting a family, but broke up under the pressures of working together.

    “It was so stressful when the restaurant first opened up,” Reis said. “The whole team, we had to fire when we started. It was really difficult, but we were naive, too. I think the hardest part is to find good people who can work for you who you trust.”

    ProteinHouse settled in during its second year. Bick undertook management duties, with Reis putting more emphasis on outside tasks such as marketing and financing. And they found the right people.

    That’s when the restaurant started to take off. Word spread particularly fast in bodybuilding circles, and Las Vegas being a frequent stop for many in that community, gym rats would return to their homes and crave more.

    “People would call here like, ‘When are you going to franchise? When are you going to franchise?’ ” Reis recalled. “Then we said, ‘You know what? I think that’s the next step,’ because people were going crazy for that.”

    The first franchised location opened this year outside of Salt Lake City, and five more, ranging from Orange County, Calif., to Kansas City, Mo., are set to join in the coming months.

    “We were not thinking about franchising or anything when we opened,” Reis said. “We just wanted a place where we could come and eat.”

    The restaurant has turned out to be much more than that, and is usually full of patrons in gym clothes from breakfast starting at 9 a.m. to dinner concluding at 10 p.m. Reis retired from competition last year, though she still maintains a strict diet and works out as diligently as ever.

    She’s not ruling out a return to bodybuilding, but for now, it’s all ProteinHouse. Stopping by the restaurant sure beats dreading the next meal.

    “When I didn’t have this restaurant, we had to be doing our own food all the time,” Reis said. “Every Sunday, I’d prep my meals for the week because we wouldn’t have time to cook because it takes a long time. It’s boring because you get the meal cold, put in the microwave and lose the nutrients because it’s not fresh anymore. That’s one thing we don’t have at ProteinHouse.”

  • Las Vegas-based ProteinHouse will be opening in Power & Light District

    Genghis Grill shuttered its Power & Light District location in late 2011, about two years after opening.

    But now Las Vegas-based ProteinHouse, fit food and espresso, has started demolition on the 2,600-square-foot space at 1345 Main St. It plans to open there around Labor Day.

    “We’re really going for everybody healthy, and for people who want to get healthy we have the diet that world trainers use,” said Rick Davis, a partner in HQDS (for Healthy Quick Dining Services), franchisee for the Kansas City region and all of Iowa.

    The group plans at least four more locations in the Kansas City area in five years. Davis’ son, Spencer Davis, had been with Cerner and will now be district manager for HQDS.

    Andrew Bick and Larissa Reis, professional athletes and workout enthusiasts, founded ProteinHouse in 2012 and now have two locations — in Las Vegas and Salt Lake City, Utah — and 33 franchisee units in the works, including the one in Power & Light.

    ProteinHouse said it provides “delicious, nutrient-dense meals, made fresh to cater to each customer’s needs.” Menu items include wraps, signature burgers like the Aloha with grilled chicken and pineapple, signature pancakes like its South Beach with vanilla whey and cottage cheese, signature salads like Chicken Caesar and Berry Lovers, breakfast quesadillas, breakfast sandwiches and build-your-own options.

    “We are extremely excited to add an innovative and lifestyle-focused new restaurant concept like ProteinHouse to the district, right on the new streetcar line,” said Nick Benjamin, executive director of the Power & Light District.
